Renault Duster Is Back: 2026 India-Spec SUV Unveiled
5 min read
The Renault Duster is officially back in India, and this is not just another nameplate revival. When the Duster first arrived in 2012, it didn’t merely join a segment — it created one. For years, it defined what a midsize SUV should feel like: tough, comfortable on bad roads, and genuinely capable beyond city limits. Over time, rivals such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and Maruti Grand Vitara took over the market, while Renault slowly faded from the conversation. With the third-generation Duster, the brand is clearly attempting to change that narrative.
Unveiled ahead of its price announcement, the new India-spec Duster brings a sharper design, a far more premium and feature-rich cabin, modern safety tech including ADAS, and — most importantly — a strong-hybrid powertrain that arrives later in the year. Pre-bookings are already open at Rs 21,000, with prices scheduled to be announced in March 2026.
Launch timeline and what buyers should know
Renault has laid out a phased launch strategy for the new Duster. Turbo-petrol variants will go on sale first, with deliveries starting in April 2026. The strong-hybrid version, which will directly rival hybrid offerings from Maruti and Toyota, is expected to follow before Diwali 2026. Every Duster will come with a class-leading 7-year/1,50,000km standard warranty, underlining Renault’s confidence in the product.

Engine options: clear choices for different buyers
Unlike the outgoing model, the new Duster offers a clearly tiered powertrain lineup designed around real-world usage.
At the entry level is a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 100hp and 160Nm, paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. This version is expected to appeal to city-focused buyers who want the Duster’s design and space without stretching their budget.
Above that sits a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine delivering a healthy 163hp and 280Nm. Available with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed DCT, this is likely to be the enthusiast’s pick — offering strong performance while remaining practical for daily use.
The most important addition, however, is the strong-hybrid powertrain arriving later in 2026. It combines a 1.8-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and a hybrid starter generator, backed by a 1.4kWh battery. With a combined output of 160hp, this setup promises better efficiency without compromising drivability — a crucial factor in today’s fuel-conscious midsize SUV market.
One notable omission is all-wheel drive. Despite its rugged image, the India-spec Duster will be offered only in front-wheel-drive form at launch.

Exterior design: modern, but true to its roots
The new Duster stays recognisable at first glance, but Renault has made several India-specific changes to give it a stronger road presence. Up front, redesigned LED headlamps with eyebrow-style DRLs double up as turn indicators, while the grille proudly spells out “Duster” instead of wearing a Renault badge. The chunky front bumper, finished with a silver insert, is a clear nod to the original first-generation model.
Along the sides, heavy black cladding around the wheel arches and lower body reinforces its SUV stance. The rear door handles are tucked into the C-pillars, roof rails are fully functional with a 50kg load rating, and wheel options go up to 18 inches. Ground clearance stands at an impressive 212mm — still one of the Duster’s biggest strengths.
India-exclusive touches include Himalayan-inspired motifs on the front fenders and a yellow accent strip on the body cladding with ‘Iconic’ branding. At the rear, triangular LED tail-lamps are connected by a full-width LED light bar, a detail not seen on the global version. Combined with strong approach and departure angles, the Duster continues to look like an SUV that’s meant to be driven beyond city limits.
Size, space and everyday usability
In terms of dimensions, the new Duster measures 4,343mm in length and rides on a 2,657mm wheelbase. These proportions translate into a spacious cabin and a large boot, with 518 litres available up to the parcel shelf. For families and long-distance travellers, this focus on practicality remains one of the Duster’s core strengths.

Interior: finally feels premium
The cabin is where the biggest transformation has taken place. Unlike the European-spec model, the India-spec Duster gets a completely redesigned dashboard that feels far more premium and better suited to local tastes.
A dual-screen layout dominates the cabin, with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system supporting wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Leatherette upholstery, soft-touch materials, silver trim inserts and contrast stitching lift the overall ambience, while physical buttons for essential controls ensure ease of use while driving.
Features like a slide-adjustable front armrest, rear armrest with cup holders and well-thought-out storage spaces make the Duster feel genuinely family-friendly.
Features and safety: a big leap forward
The new Duster is the most feature-packed Renault SUV ever sold in India. Highlights include a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, wireless charging, powered tailgate, and 6-way power-adjustable front seats with ventilation.
On the safety front, Renault has made a clear statement. Six airbags come as standard, along with disc brakes on all four wheels, a 360-degree camera, parking sensors, TPMS and an electronic parking brake. Most importantly, the Duster becomes the first Renault in India to offer Level 2 ADAS, with features such as Automatic Emergency Braking and Adaptive Cruise Control. Renault has confirmed it is targeting a full 5-star crash safety rating.
Platform and ride comfort
Built on the Renault Group Modular Platform, the new Duster has been tuned specifically for Indian conditions. Renault claims extensive suspension testing, including racetrack development, to deliver best-in-class ride quality — an area where the original Duster built its reputation.
Expected pricing and competition
Prices are expected to fall in the Rs 10–20 lakh (ex-showroom) range, depending on variant and powertrain. The Duster will compete in one of India’s most crowded segments, taking on the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder, Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun, Tata Sierra and Honda Elevate.
Why this launch matters
The return of the Duster is a crucial moment for Renault in India. This is not just about launching a new SUV — it’s about rebuilding credibility in a segment that the brand once dominated. With modern features, serious safety tech, a hybrid option and a design that respects its rugged legacy, the 2026 Renault Duster has the potential to be more than just a nostalgic comeback. Pricing, as always, will decide whether it truly reclaims its place at the top.
Prices will be announced in March 2026.
