2026 Mahindra Thar OG: What Has Changed, What You Get and How to Book

Mahindra has given the three-door Thar a much more comprehensive update for 2026, and this time the changes go well beyond a new grille and a few additional features.

The updated SUV is now called the Mahindra Thar OG, separating it from the larger Thar Roxx. It gets a new platform, revised rear suspension, frequency-dependent damping, electric power steering, an electronic locking differential, new terrain modes and more powerful versions of its 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines.

Prices start at ₹10.32 lakh and go up to ₹18.99 lakh, ex-showroom. The range continues with three engine options, manual and automatic transmissions, and both rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive configurations depending on the variant.

For someone looking to buy one, however, the more important question is what has actually changed and which parts of the new Thar will matter once it leaves the showroom.

The Thar gets a much bigger mechanical update than its design suggests

At first glance, the Thar OG still looks unmistakably like a Thar.

The basic silhouette remains familiar, but underneath, Mahindra has made some of the most significant changes since the current-generation Thar arrived.

The Thar OG moves to Mahindra's M_Glyde 4G platform, shared with the newer Thar Roxx. It also gets a revised rear suspension setup with Penta-link suspension and Watts Link, along with Frequency Dependent Damping technology.

The objective is straightforward: improve the way the Thar behaves both on the road and away from it.

Another major first for the three-door Thar is electric power steering. The previous model used hydraulic assistance, which could feel heavy during low-speed manoeuvring. The new electric setup should make parking and everyday urban driving easier.

For an SUV that is likely to spend considerably more time on roads than trails for many owners, this is arguably one of the more meaningful changes.

More power from the bigger engines

The Thar OG continues with three engine choices.

The entry-level 1.5-litre diesel produces 119hp and 300Nm and is available exclusively with a six-speed manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive.

The larger 2.2-litre diesel now produces 152hp and 330Nm, while the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol produces 162hp and 330Nm.

Both larger engines can be paired with a six-speed manual or six-speed torque-converter automatic, with RWD and 4WD configurations available depending on the powertrain and variant.

The 2.2-litre diesel gains 18hp and 30Nm over the previous version, while the petrol gains 10hp and 30Nm.

That makes the powertrain range more interesting than the entry price alone suggests. A buyer can choose the relatively straightforward 1.5 diesel RWD, a petrol automatic for everyday use, or move into the larger engines and four-wheel drive for buyers who intend to use the Thar's off-road capability more seriously.

The Thar OG is now better equipped for off-road driving

Mahindra has also addressed the mechanical side of the Thar's off-road package.

The 4WD versions get an Electronic Locking Differential, along with dedicated terrain modes for Mud, Sand and Snow. There are also Zip and Zoom drive modes.

The electronic locking differential is designed to help transfer torque to the wheel with better traction when conditions become difficult.

These features are restricted to the appropriate 4WD variants, so buyers should pay attention to the exact configuration rather than assuming every Thar OG carries the same off-road hardware.

The distinction matters because the Thar OG range is unusually broad. The entry-level AXT is a rear-wheel-drive 1.5 diesel manual, while the LXT and ZXT open up the larger petrol and diesel engines, automatic transmissions and 4WD.

The exterior is familiar, but the details are new

The Thar's overall shape remains deliberately recognisable, but the front end has been redesigned.

There is a new grille with revised Thar branding, new LED headlamps with C-shaped DRLs, LED fog lamps with a cornering function and redesigned front and rear bumpers.

The Thar OG also gets a wider track and new 19-inch alloy wheels on higher variants, giving it a stance closer to the larger Thar Roxx.

At the rear, the SUV gets revised LED tail-lamps and OG branding.

Mahindra has also added two new exterior colours: Artemis Silver and Jeans Blue, alongside Deep Forest, Galaxy Grey, Battleship Grey, Tango Red, Stealth Black and Everest White.

The cabin gets more useful equipment

The basic cabin architecture remains familiar, but Mahindra has added several features that make the Thar more contemporary.

Depending on the variant, the Thar OG gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a six-speaker audio system, cruise control, rear wiper and washer, wireless charging and a rear armrest with cupholders.

The top-spec ZXT adds Truffle Brown leatherette upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and additional premium equipment.

The new Thar also gets push-button start, electric power steering and other convenience features across the range.

It is worth remembering that not every feature is available on every variant. The Thar OG has a particularly wide spread between AXT, LXT and ZXT, so choosing the right variant will have a significant effect on what you actually get.

Safety has moved up as well

The Thar OG's safety equipment has also been expanded.

Higher variants get six airbags, all-wheel disc brakes and front parking sensors, while the SUV also gets ESP with rollover mitigation and other electronic safety systems.

Mahindra says the top-spec versions also feature its HPTS airbag system, designed to provide additional protection in side impacts.

The important point for buyers is that several of these features are variant-dependent, so the base Thar should not be assumed to have the same safety specification as the ZXT.

Mahindra Thar OG price and variant structure

The Thar OG is offered in three trims: AXT, LXT and ZXT.

The entry-level AXT is available only with the 1.5-litre diesel, six-speed manual and rear-wheel drive, at ₹10.32 lakh ex-showroom.

The LXT and ZXT are considerably more flexible, with the larger petrol and diesel engines, automatic transmissions and 4WD configurations becoming available.

All prices are introductory ex-showroom prices. Mahindra says these prices are valid for deliveries until 30 November 2026.

Which Thar OG should you buy?

This is where the Thar OG becomes more complicated than its ₹10.32 lakh starting price suggests.

The AXT is the entry point and gives buyers access to the Thar's basic architecture and 1.5-litre diesel powertrain without moving deep into the price range.

The LXT is where the range opens up considerably. It is available with all three engines and provides access to the automatic gearbox, 4WD and a much larger feature set.

The ZXT adds the equipment that makes the Thar feel considerably more premium, including 19-inch alloys, LED lighting, wireless charging, leatherette upholstery, a rear-view camera, front parking sensors, six airbags and other upgrades.

Rather than declaring one variant universally right for every buyer, the choice depends heavily on how the Thar will be used.

A city-focused buyer may value the petrol automatic and RWD configuration. Someone who expects regular trail use may prioritise a 4WD powertrain. A buyer looking for the full feature package will naturally find more of what they want higher in the range.
